Club Championships 2012 – Finals

The limos arrived, the red carpet was rolled out, the Paparazzi, CNN, FOX NEWS and MSNBC were ready. Amidst screaming fans, the finalists for The Physical Park Squash Club Championships arrived. There were 12 gladiators, ready to do battle. First in the arena were Yves Quenneville and James Horvath. James had beaten the legend Jerry Poole in a squeaker. Would Yves stand a chance of winning? Yes! Yves pulled out all his tricks and danced around James. James went down in flames.

Next in the arena were Alex Von Huene and Ray Oesterreich battling for Men’s B. Speed and agility abounded, but all too quickly for Ray, it was over and Alex was the victor 3 – 0. Next to compete were Alex Zivic and Sylvain Turcotte, Men’s A consolation. The fans were not disappointed with the high calibre of play, but the match was over too quickly for Sylvain as he lost 3-0. Then came the match of the century. Christian Chevrier, the Godfather, was pitted against his Godson, Sebastien Boudreau. Christian had taught Sebastien everything he knew, but would he live to regret it? The games were long and arduous. Would Sebastien become Christian’s Ex-Godson? In the fourth game, when he was tired, Christian used his old ploy of wiping the imaginary water off the court floor. Refreshed, he continued the game but to no avail, he lost and the games were tied 2 – 2. There was absolute silence in the room when the two players entered the court for the fifth and final game, except for the caps snapping off the bottles. Seb turned on the afterburners and that was it. The old master himself had to step down from his throne and give the crown to the young Sebastien. There was not a dry eye in the place. “He was good,” cried one old lady, “but it was time for him to go” Meanwhile on court 2, Ryan Depretis, the Rookie and Brian Corrigan, the veteran, met in what could have been a bloodbath, but wasn’t. The ever crafty Brian noticed after about 50 shots, that Ryan was returning the backhand serve by standing with his back against the wall and doing a forehand shot. “Once I figured that out, I drilled my serves right at him,” commented Brian. “Eventually he adjusted and then I started dropping the ball. I don’t think he was used to that. He caught onto that, but by then it was too late. He gave me a great game, though.” By the time Brian had finished his game analysis the fans had either left or were sound asleep. Next in the arena, fighting for Men’s C and meeting for the first time were Domenico Ciarallo and Jeffrey St. Amant. “Who is this guy?” inquired Domenico. “He never played in Wednesday Night League, did he? After the match Domenico knew who Jeffrey St. Amant was – the winner. It was a great match, though.

David Warner, Physical Park’s chef, prepared the most amazing chicken wings, pizza bites and crudities. The entire club dropped by to munch and there was still tons left. Thanks David!

Thanks to Alex and Adam for the free beer.

Thanks Darnley, for organizing the draw.

Thanks to everyone for participating.

Congratulations to Sebastien Boudreau for being the number 1 player in the club.

The theme for next year is revenge!! Start practising!!

Club Championships – Semi-Finals

Ray Oesterreich and Zack Karim met on the court for the first time. Both of them young, tall and buff, they certainly looked impressive. Their match was impressive, too, with long rallies, sometimes 200 shots in a row. When they finished the match, they were old, short and skinny. That’s what squash can do to you.

Domineco Ciarallo showed no mercy as he defeated Geoff Bawart 3 – 1. Geoff was doing well until he tripped over Domeneco’s mouth guard. Jeffrey St. Amant, a bit of a mystery man, came out of seclusion to defeat Sigi Nino. It was a great match, a credit to the skills of both players.

The Club Championships have spawned the careers of two exciting and totally unique young players. Both of them are dynamic Real Estate agents and they closed 4 deals in the midst of competition. Anthony Snyder, the more sedate of the two, displayed some excellent racquet skills and good game sense. Ryan Depretis, on the other hand, blasted onto the court like he was shot from a canon. He was everywhere, thrashing and slashing, shooting between his legs. The fans loved it. “This is what squash needs, entertainment!”

The Paparazzi were all over Ryan. Anderson Cooper was waiting for an interview. Rush Limbaugh had already denounced Anthony and Ryan as Democratic pawns. Unfortunately, Christian Danis had to encounter both young men on his journey to the finals. Christian’s journey ended rather suddenly. When he played Anthony, Christian was still dizzy from playing Ryan. It was like a tag team match. One started the job and the other jumped in to finish it. Anthony won 3 -0, but the games were close.

In the meantime, Philippe Abi Saleh entered the club. As he approached court two, the walls started packing their bags ready to leave. “Philippe, you’re playing on court 1.” The walls of court two started cheering. Philippe entered court 1 before the walls had a chance to prepare. Philippe had no idea whom he was playing. OH MY GOD, IT WAS RYAN DEPRETIS!!! Philippe, not known for his good humour, stepped into a tornado when his match with Ryan started. Ryan hit the ball so hard it went through the walls a few times. Once it passed right through the wall between the courts and knocked out a player on the other side. To his credit, Philippe kept his temper for most of the match. In the final game, Ryan won the last point, when he hit Philippe in the back and Darnley declared it a stroke for Ryan. “The ball was on its way to the front wall,” explained Darnley. Yes, it was on its way to the front wall, but Philippe was still attached! That was it for Philippe! His good behaviour came to an end! He blasted Darnley and then left the club uttering every profanity imaginable. You almost made it this time, Philippe! The march out of the club is long and lonely!

The game of the night, though, was between Alex Von Huene and Gerry Poole. Fans poured in from all corners of the world. Gerry’s lovely wife was there to cheer on her man. The fans were not disappointed! It was the match that dreams are made of, except for Gerry who has had nightmares ever since, but that’s another story. The games went right to the wire. Gerry played like a god. Alex was like greased lightning. The last point of the game – GERRY HIT THE TIN!!!!! After the crying was over, Alex was a good sport and didn’t rub it in. WRONG!!!! Alex savoured the win like a Cheshire cat!

More to come….

Club Championships 2012 – Semi Finals – April 16 – April 23

Wednesday Night League ended and then the Club Championships commenced, all in one breath. It was seamless. Darnley Holder with his 95 years of experience running tournaments took control and dazzled the fans with his organizational skills. Gerry Poole, now know as Old Faithful, took charge of the refereeing and entertained the crowd with his tales of “Let” folklore. Geoff Bawart sat behind Gerry for the entire tournament to get a free “Let” Clinic. Last seen, Geoff was being checked into the Douglas muttering, “How does he do it? There are 5,649 rules and he knows every one. Let, stroke, let, stroke, let, stroke, let it go, stroke it away, let it go. I can’t ahhhhhhhh!” We’ll see Geoff in a few years, hopefully. Seb Boudreau, one of the youngest players, combined his youthful vigour and some pretty good racquet skills to defeat Alex Zivic 3 – 0.

Stephane Marotte and Sylvain Turcotte kept the fans guessing till the very end. It was great squash! Stephane was the victor, but he had to work hard. Sylvain wasn’t giving anything away. Christian Chevrier defeated his Interclub team-mate Pierre Martin in three games straight. Pierre was on his cell throughout the entire match overseeing the installation of his latest kitchen, which might have contributed to his demise.

James Horvath returned to the ring, pulling up in front of the club in a white stretch limo with the Paparazzi and the Hudson Gazette in hot pursuit. He encountered Ray Oesterreich for the first time and things didn’t start well for James as he was soundly defeated in the first game. James paid the Paparazzi to flash their bulbs in Ray’s eyes and that was it. James took the match 3 – 1.

Mike Pouliot pulled out everything in his bag of tricks to defeat Alex 3 – 0.

Zack slipped a game past Yves Quenneville. Yves had just returned from a vacation in Europe so he hadn’t charged his batteries yet. One game was all it took. Varoom! Yves took off like a bat out of hell and wiped the floor with Zack. You can’t wake a sleeping giant, Zack!

The lovely Laura Odorico met Anthony Snyder, a newcomer to the tournament circuit. Twice as old as Anthony, Laura showed him what squash was all about. She left him panting on the court, begging for mercy. No way, Anthony, you’re going down! And down he went 3 – 0.

Meanwhile, Geoff Bawart defeated Philippe Abi Saleh 3 – 1. Ryan Depretis came out of nowhere to hammer the veteran, Christian Danis. Ryan was so fast that the match was over before Christian knew that it had started. Ryan was wielding his racquet like a sword. Swish, swish, Christian almost lost his head a few times. Geoff Bawart’s second match was against the lovely Laura Odorico, who usually managed to bamboozle him with her inrticate ‘Touch shots” – a little drop here and a little drop there. NOT TONIGHT, LAURA! Geoff showed no concern that Laura was a woman, and twice his age to boot. Laura tried all her tricks for sympathy, the cane, the limp, sore back, and hemmeroids, but Geoff was not going to be fooled. Laura lost 3-0, but the games were close. Jeffrey St.Amant, the Young, met Brian Corrigan, the Old and Youth won out over Geritol. The match was over, 3-0, before Brian got out of his wheelchair.

The most anticipated match was Gerry Poole against James Horvath. James was playing for the second time after a serious back injury. Gerry was playing regularly with his arch rival Barry, so the money was on Gerry. WHAT!!! GERRY, WHAT ARE YOU DOING??? GET IN THE GAME! The fans went wild and tore the club apart. THE MATCH WAS FIXED! THEY DRUGGED OUR BOY! Gerry left the court, defeated 3-0. Three days later Gerry was seen walking down St.Charles

BioSignature Analysis: The Ultimate Fat Loss Program

Physical Park’s BioSignature practitioner is David Savard

If there were a map that showed you exactly what you needed to do for fat loss, it would almost be as good as BioSignature.  One of the biggest mistakes you can make when trying to lose fat is to not get a program that is customized for your body.  If there were a one size fits all program that worked, everyone would be using it by now.  Not only does BioSignature guide you on your fat loss journey, it shows you how to do it in the healthiest way so your results last.  A common misconception in fitness is that people need to get healthy by losing weight.  In reality, it is much better to lose weight by getting healthy.  BioSignature is the perfect marriage of improving your health while improving your body composition.  Fat accumulation is repeatedly blamed on people consuming too many calories and by not burning enough.  Anyone that has struggled with exercise and diet programs can tell you that eating less and moving more doesn’t always produce great or lasting results.

When it comes to where you accumulate and store fat, you need to look at your hormones.  Hormones basically tell the body what to do with its resources and energy.  Insulin is the hormone that tells your body to store blood sugar. Cortisol is a hormone that helps you deal with stress and provides you with energy.  Thyroid hormones help regulate your basal metabolism.  The list goes on and on, but the bottom line is that if you want to drastically improve the way you look and feel, it all starts with controlling your hormones.  In a world where prescription drugs are now the number one cause of accidental death in the US, there is no better quote than:

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”

― Hippocrates

The three main causes of fat storage are: stress, toxins, and mal-nutrition. Stress, toxins, and mal-nutrition all have a negative impact on your hormones.  What I mean by negative impact is that they increase the hormones that tell your body to store fat and decrease the hormones that tell your body to have energy and lean muscle.  Stress, toxins, and mal-nutrition can also break down your metabolic and energy making systems over time, making it even harder to exercise and eat right.

Stress, toxins, and mal-nutrition are all affected by diet.  Eating high carb foods, foods with bad fats, foods that cause inflammation, and foods without nutrition are major sources of dietary stress.  Toxins can be found in non-organic produce, commercial meats, and processed foods.  The food you eat can contribute to toxic load and/or stress on your body.  Food also has the greatest impact on hormones out of anything you can do naturally.  For everybody there is a unique need of nutrition, and BioSignature can help guide you on what you need to be eating more of and what you need to be eating less of.  Some people need to avoid carbs; others need to focus on fiber or antioxidants.  Then in a month, your body’s needs might change, and this is why getting regular BioSignature measurements can keep you on track.

The next two things that can drastically effect fat loss, if done right, are exercise and supplementation.  Once again, doing what’s right for your body, not your friend’s, your sister’s, your neighbor’s, but your own unique body is key.  I have personally seen people go from gaining weight, to losing weight and fat while exercising less and eating more, simply because they started doing what is right for their body, right now.

So how does the BioSignature Method determine what food, supplements and exercise are best for you?

When it comes to health, people tend to be most concerned with acute symptoms.  These are things like pain, diarrhea, and feeling tired.  BioSignature measures where you store your fat as a symptom checker.  Love handles are a symptom of too much insulin from dietary carbohydrates, while lower body fat can mean issues with estrogens and toxins.  There are 12 specific sites that have to be precisely measured by a BioSignature practitioner.  These ratios are then analyzed so that your path to leanness can be determined based on which hormones or nutritional needs are the most out of whack.  The way we eat, exercise, and the supplements we take all shift our hormones.  If you are exercising in a way that increases cortisol, and cortisol being too high is the biggest thing holding you back from fat loss, it’s never going to work.  If you’re deficient in a vital nutrient like zinc or magnesium, you can spin your wheels more and more each day only to feel worse and worse by exacerbating the problem.  BioSignature allows you to avoid making these mistakes and jump on the fast track to fat loss.

Depending on whom you ask in the fitness industry, spot-reducing body fat from specific areas is either possible or impossible.  I’m going to tell you straight out the door, BioSignature is the only method of spot-reducing fat, because it addresses the hormonal reasons causing site-specific fat gain.  Some people store more fat in their chest region, others have those dreaded love handles.  Some people sport the beer belly, and some people struggle with excess fat in the extremities, like under the arms or around the thighs.  The ratios of where you store your fat are a reflection of what is going on in your body on a nutritional and hormonal level.  Each person has a unique profile that is a result of the genetic and the environmental factors that they live with.

Disproportionate distribution of body fat is caused by a combination of your own genetics and unique biochemistry interacting with your environment.” – Nick Mitchell.

There are no spot-reducing or toning exercises to correct these.  You must make the shift by adjusting your diet and nutritional program so that you start managing your hormones differently.  BioSignature breaks down your profile so you know exactly what changes are necessary for you to lose weight and what things are a waste of time or could even cause more fat gain.  For instance, some people need more or less carbohydrates, some people will actually lose more fat by exercising less, others need to exercise more, and some people need a complete overhaul.

Other Reasons Why You Should See a BioSignature Practitioner

A BioSignature Practitioner will:

  • Help you fix your sleep.  Fixing your sleep can fix a lot.
  • Help you correct nutritional imbalances and deficiencies.  This is the basis on which your health and fat loss goals depend.
  • Suggest supplements that improve your health rather than coming with a mile long disclaimer.  No one ever got healthy on fat burners and thermogenics, which just cause rebounding weight gain.
  • Help you learn how to eat, exercise, and supplement for your body’s specific needs.
  • Help show you how to spot-reduce fat where you want to lose it most.  BioSignature is the only method that can do this.
  • Suggest a good Functional or Integrative Medicine Doctor if needed.  A good practitioner knows when to refer a client to a specialist.

Squash Results – April 4, 2012.

Three weeks ago the league was flowing along smoothly and all was well with the world. Brenda was lulled into a false sense of security, she relaxed her iron fisted control on the players and then all hell broke loose. No shows, no shows, no shows. Yan was working on the roofs, Tyler was delivering goods across the country, Maurice was pretending to be injured so he could save his calves for golf, Monique was injured, Ed was away, but played his games in advance, Ed’s in Brenda’s Good Books, and so the story goes on and on…

Meanwhile back at the courts, Zack should have stayed home. His match with Alex was over so fast that the fans wondered if it had actually taken place. People were seen scratching their heads and mumbling, “I think I saw it, but maybe I’m wrong.” “It couldn’t have happened, it was too fast.” “Zack was here, wasn’t he?”

During the next match, Brian and Laura battled back and forth. Brian won the first two games and then Laura, looking lovely in chartreuse, started adjusting her bra strap in front of Brian. Everyone pointed at Brian and warned, “If you lose the next game, Brian, we’ll know what you are!” Sure enough, he lost. His hand was seen shaking as he held the racquet. When Laura came off the court, Darnley started talking about “length” and that was it for Brian. He didn’t stand a chance. Laura went on the court and dominated. Brian was only a shadow of his former self. Laura knew that she had her “Wonderbra” doing wonders for her and she attacked like a spitfire. Brian left the court mumbling that he liked when a match went to 5 games, but the fans weren’t buying it. The score was tied at 14, Brian asked for a “let” and Darnley said no. Would Brian be able to handle it? He was a sucker for the bra strap, now what about the controversial call? Brian rallied, but Laura was victorious 18 – 16. She came off the court and gave Darnley a tongue lashing for not calling a “Stroke” against Brian, when she was leading 15 – 14. Darnley, if Laura had lost the match you would not have lived to see tomorrow.

Being the philosopher that she is Brenda was overheard telling Fox News that squash is like a game of “Snakes and Ladders.” Some people go up the ladders and some go down the snakes. Yan, Ed, Maurice and Ray are sliding down those reptiles while Christian, Wills, Laura and Domenico are climbing those ladders.

It’s tournament time, Folks. Sign up for the Club Championships.

See you in October when the league resumes.

Keep practising.
