Wednesday Night League – October 12th.
The new Wednesday Night League competitors met on the court for the first time this season. Groans and moans could be heard as several players declared that they hadn’t touched a racquet all summer. In spite of that, the games were exciting as league games always are. The league is composed of men, women and juniors which creates interesting match-ups. The two women in the league, Laura Odorico and Monique Deforges were both victorious. Strategy sessions followed the matches, some lessons were booked with Darnley, commitments to lose weight and get into shape were discussed… Tune in to next weeks results!

We’re always after the quick and easy way to a healthy body and mind. If we were to extract 10 habits of the healthiest individuals in our society, what would they be?
Well, the first step would be to determine what “healthy” really means? Is it a number on a scale? Is it an external trait? Is it values in a blood test? Arguably, any one of these can be a marker of good health. In essence, health includes a broad spectrum of criteria. Ultimately, external and internal stressors are the reason for an unhealthy population. For this article, I conducted interviews with several healthy people ranging in age from 18 to 75. After discussing 10 of their healthiest habits, I combined their responses to assemble the following list:
Sleeping: Many of us do not log the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Why? Kids, late-night caffeine jolt, various sleep disorders, watching our favorite television shows late into the evening…. the list goes on. Not only do most of us lack sleep time but also most of the hours we spend asleep occur after midnight. Unfortunately, pre-midnight sleep is the most valuable and the most restorative.
Drinking water: We read it over and over and still it is said that 70% of the population is dehydrated. Many of us think we drink enough fluids, however it is possible to consume what seems to be an adequate amount of water and still be dehydrated. After all, it is not the amount of H20 that we drink that matters; it is the amount of H20 that our bodies actually absorb. If one eats too much sodium, drinks too much coffee or alcohol, or eats a poor quality diet, the body cannot use the water ingested. Therefore, the habit of drinking enough water goes in conjunction with the following healthy habit.
Staying away from packaged food: The healthiest among us eat whole foods that come from the earth. Anything that has been packaged by (wo)man has undergone some type of processing. Therefore, stick to nature’s packaging and consume foods that will actually provide you with valuable nutrients. The simple rule is: forego foods that come to you in a cardboard box and/or plastic wrapper.
Spending time with loved ones: This habit is often overlooked and seems to constitute a very important aspect of a healthy individual’s life. Stress levels are reduced when the people we love surround us.
Spending time in nature: You may not be a nature lover, but we can all benefit from time spent outside in the fresh air and in the sun. Just 10 minutes spent outside has been said to rejuvenate the mind and calm the spirit.
Finding one’s life purpose: This healthy habit can be an ambiguous one – purpose in this case does not necessarily refer to a job or a career. Instead, it refers to your values and under what value system you choose to live your life. For example, you may find purpose in your family members, your community, or in the planet. Essentially, one’s life purpose refers to the place one chooses to take in society.
Parking at the far end of the parking lot and other tricks to encourage extra movement: My test subjects admitted to parking their vehicle in a manner that forces them to walk a little more and therefore spend an extra few moments outside.
Enjoying “alone time”: Whether it is meditation, reading alone, having a meal alone, or taking a walk alone – spending a couple of moments or hours alone every day is an excellent way to significantly reduce stress levels and catch up with one’s thoughts. These precious moments allow us to regroup after or amidst a hectic day at work or at home.
Speaking your mind: This does not give license to blurt out anything and everything. Instead, ensure that you do not hold in negative thoughts or emotions – this increases stress and ultimately ages you!
Exercising regularly and purposefully: My healthy test-subjects all agreed that as obvious as it sounds, exercise is key to reducing stress and ultimately increasing the quality of your life. In addition, you do not have to spend hours peddling away on a stationary bike. Short bursts of intense exercise at the gym are more effective and leave you with more time to engage in fun activities, such as playing a game of soccer with your friends or going biking with your family. It has also been said that having an exercise partner or a personal trainer helps to keep you on track. (Similarly, this person can be a loved one, thereby addressing 2 healthy habits from this list!)
Naturally, this list of 10 healthy habits may not ring true to everyone. We all have different ideas about what “healthy” means. Therefore, I encourage you to take 10 minutes to write down 10 healthy habits that you would like to adopt or that you believe you are already practicing. (This could even constitute your 10 minutes of “alone time”!)

A Conversation between Two Personal Trainers

While each personal trainer is different in their general style and approach to educating and training their clients, the questions they receive in consultation sessions are often the same. In this article, I interview Marc Charles (a recent addition to the Physical Park family) about his stance on some of the most common questions we encounter as fitness professionals.

Anna: In my time as a personal trainer, I often received the following question from my female clientele: “I am a female and want to know if there is a different way that women should exercise to achieve a lean physique? I am looking for reduced body fat with moderate muscle tone.” Marc, how would you answer this inquiry?

Marc: I believe that women and men should both train at an intense level whether it is for fat loss or for strength. Many women are scared to lift heavy weights in order to achieve a lean physique in fear of waking up the next day looking like the ‘Incredible Hulk’. However, what many ladies fail to realize is that men produce a lot more testosterone than women and therefore possess the capacity to build larger muscles. Women, by contrast, generally have to work extremely hard to build large bulky muscles. Hence, do not fear the heavier weights! In addition, if women mix weight-training exercises with cardio-based exercises they are sure to have a lean body and attractive muscle tone. For my female clients, I tend to use a boot camp format to combine the two types of training and produce the desired results.
Anna: Let’s move on to the next question. In today’s fast paced work environment, many find it difficult to find the time to exercise. Moreover, there seems to be a discrepancy in the fitness world between those who believe that dedicating hours to exercise daily is the only way to achieve success and those who maintain that proper results come from short bursts of exercise. “I have 30 minutes per day that I can devote to exercising. What is more effective – cardio or weight training?”
Marc: The answer is pretty simple in my mind. I recommend a mixture of both. If you have 30 minutes, try to perform resistance training (using weights or body weight exercises) in a cardio-focused manner: for example, you may choose to perform a circuit of 7 consecutive exercises with minimal rest in between each exercise and round. This method really revs up your metabolism and keeps your body and mind guessing what movement comes next!

Anna: Here is the next question: “I have been inactive for years and want to start an exercise regime. How often and what should I focus on in the beginning?”

Marc: The first thing I do with a novice exerciser is to test cardiovascular fitness and basic range of motion (such as squatting and deadlifting movements). I want to ensure that there are no injuries that need attention before we commence a rigorous exercise regimen. If the client requires treatment from a specialist, I am well connected in a network of health practitioners that can help iron out any physical ailments or imbalances. Once safety and health issues have been addressed, I usually start a novice client with a basic resistance-training program. Technique and proper form is extremely important in this stage. I recommend a minimum of 3 days per week of exercise for those that are looking to change their physique and fitness level.

Anna: What is your stance on nutritional supplementing? “I am starting an exercise regime and want to start supplementing with protein powder and/or other supplements. What should I choose?”

Marc: Before spending a lot of money on supplements, I recommend consulting a fitness professional first. A qualified trainer, for example, can determine what and if supplements are beneficial in the client’s specific case. In addition, I always ensure during a consultation that I can rule out any allergic reactions to ingredients and that the supplements I recommend compliment my client’s eating habits as well as their fitness goals.

Anna: Here is the final question. “I am a seasoned gym rat. I am bored of my weight routine. I change my program often, but am getting bored and seem to be hitting a rut in my progression and my ability to see results. What should I do?”

Marc: In order to avoid hitting progress plateaus, I recommend changing your routine every 6-8 weeks. Engaging a personal trainer or switching up group exercise classes is integral to keeping the results coming and motivation at its peak. A successful personal trainer will keep your routine challenging for both your body and your mind. If the weight training is boring you, you may want to incorporate some classes such as boot camps or yoga into your weekly schedule. Finally, in consultation with a trainer, I recommend cycling your program over the year according to season, goals, and personal schedule (a principle called periodization).

Thank you Marc for sharing your thoughts on these common fitness questions. Marc is a CANFIT certified personal trainer at Physical Park Health Centre. He offers one-on-one personal training and specializes in boot camp classes. For more information or to book a consultation with Marc, visit the Physical Park website.

Nutrition Consultations
How we fuel our bodies is the most important information we need to learn to not only achieve our fitness goals, but to also help fight off aging and disease. It’s imperative to understand how food affects are system, the influence it has on our sleeping patterns, our emotions, our energy levels, our ability to use our minds and our general status of health. The way we eat today WILL affect our health years down the road. Yet, little thought is placed on our daily, weekly, yearly intake of food. Yes, people are more health conscience today and they are “watching” what they eat, but the discipline is not always present and crafty marketing food labels can be very deceiving and they do not help us to sustain healthy lifestyle for the long term. We offer a lot of helpful information and guidance with respect to nutrition and how to apply healthy habits to your everyday life. http://www.100purehealth.com/contact/
